B.Sc. (Eng.) - Electrical Engineering
Patali Champika Ranawaka is an engineering graduate of the University of Moratuwa, where he earned a B.Sc. Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering. His technical academic background helped shape his policy focus on infrastructure, energy, urban development, technology, and national planning.
Chartered Engineer
Patali Champika Ranawaka is a Chartered Engineer and Electrical Engineering graduate whose professional background has strongly influenced his public service career. His engineering expertise has been especially visible in policy areas such as power and energy, technology, research, urban development, environmental management, and national infrastructure planning.
School Education
Mathematics stream GCE Advanced Level examination ranking first from the Kalutara District to the engineering faculty of the University of Moratuwa and obtain a degree in Electrical Engineering, building the academic foundation for his professional career as a Chartered Engineer and public policy leader.
Political Career
Patali Champika Ranawaka’s political career spans more than two decades, marked by leadership in national policy, environment, power and energy, technology, urban development, and governance reform. He entered Parliament in 2007 and later served as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Minister of Power and Energy, Minister of Technology and Research, and Minister of Megapolis and Western Development.
Political Timeline
He entered Parliament in 2001, later became General Secretary of the Jathika Hela Urumaya in 2004, and returned to Parliament in 2007 as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources. He subsequently served as Minister of Power and Energy, Minister of Technology and Research, and Minister of Megapolis and Western Development. From 2020 to 2024, he served in Parliament under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, and in 2023 he launched the United Republic Front as a new political platform.

Projects Completed
Under the Urban Regeneration Programme, 16 Phase-I housing projects were completed and 8,380 families were settled in new apartment housing. His tenure as Minister of Megapolis and Western Development was also linked with key urban infrastructure projects such as the Rajagiriya Flyover, Sukitha Purawara township development initiatives, Polonnaruwa urban development projects, and strategic city development planning across Sri Lanka.
Development Plans
Urban modernization, infrastructure development, technology-driven governance, energy security, environmental sustainability, and clean public administration. His policy approach has been closely associated with the Western Region Megapolis Plan, the National Physical Planning Policy and Plan 2050, urban regeneration housing projects, transport integration, industrial township development, strategic city planning, and economic recovery reforms.
